Sahih al-Bukhari 1963 (Book 30, Hadith 70) #1883
The Benefits of Breaking a Fast Before Suhur

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised against fasting continuously and suggested that if one intends to lengthen their fast, they should only do so until the Suhur before the following dawn. He also mentioned that he was not similar to them as he had someone who made him eat and drink during his sleep.

'Narrated Abu Sa'id: That he had heard the Prophet saying, "Do not fast continuously (practice Al-Wisal), and if you intend to lengthen your fast, then carry it on only till the Suhur (before the following dawn)". The people said to him, "But you practice (Al-Wisal), O Allah's Messenger !" He replied, "I am not similar to you, for during my sleep I have One Who makes me eat and drink".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of breaking a fast before suhur. It was narrated by Abu Sa'id that he heard the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advising against fasting continuously, or practicing al-wisal, which is when one does not break their fast even after sunset. Instead, if one wishes to extend their fast beyond sunset, they should only do so until suhur before the following dawn. The Prophet ﷺ then mentioned that he himself was different from others as during his sleep there was someone who made him eat and drink - this being Allah Almighty Himself. This hadith teaches us about moderation in our religious practices; it is important for us to take breaks in between our worship so we can be more productive in our spiritual journey with Allah Almighty. We must remember that Allah Almighty knows best what is good for us and we must trust His wisdom when it comes to matters of faith and practice.
