Breaking Fast at Sunset

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) was fasting and when the sun set, he asked someone to mix Sawiq with water for him. He replied that it was still daytime, but the Prophet (ﷺ) insisted and he mixed Sawiq with water for them. The Prophet (ﷺ) then said that when night falls from this side, the fasting person should break his fast.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abi 'Aufa: We were in the company of the Prophet on a journey and he was fasting, and when the sun set, he addressed somebody, "O so-and-so, get up and mix Sawiq with water for us". He replied, "O Allah's Apostle! (Will you wait) till it is evening?" The Prophet said, "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for us". He replied, "O Allah's Messenger ! (If you wait) till it is evening". The Prophet said again, "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for us". He replied, "It is still daytime".(1) The Prophet said again, "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for us". He got down and mixed Sawiq for them. The Prophet drank it and then said, "When you see night falling from this side, the fasting person should break his fast".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about breaking fast at sunset. It is narrated by Abdullah bin Abi Aufa who was in the company of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on a journey and he was fasting. When the sun set, he asked someone to mix Sawiq with water for him but they hesitated as it was still daytime. However, after insisting from the Prophet ﷺ they mixed sawiq with water for them and drank it after which he said that when night falls from this side, then a fasting person should break their fast. This hadith teaches us about patience and obedience towards Allah's commands as well as respecting our elders even if we don't agree with what they are saying or asking us to do. It also teaches us about being mindful of time especially during Ramadan where we must be aware of when sunset arrives so we can break our fast accordingly.
