Sahih al-Bukhari 1956 (Book 30, Hadith 63) #1876
Breaking Fast at Sunset

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) was travelling and fasting, and when the sun set he asked someone to mix Sawiq with water for him. He then explained that when night falls from the east, the fasting person should break their fast.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abi 'Aufa: We were traveling with Allah's Messenger and he was fasting, and when the sun set, he said to (someone), "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for us". He replied, "O Allah's Messenger ! (Will you wait) till it is evening?" The Prophet again said, "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for us". He replied, "O Allah's Messenger ! It is still daytime". The Prophet said again, "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for us". So, he got down and carried out that order. The Prophet then said, "When you see night falling from this side, the fasting person should break his fast," and he beckoned with his finger towards the east.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Allah’s Commands & Be Mindful Of Our Actions

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fasting during Ramadan, which is one of the five pillars of Islam. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset every day for a month. When it comes time to break their fast at sunset, they are encouraged to do so with something sweet like sawiq mixed with water. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was travelling while fasting and asked someone to mix sawiq with water for him when it was time to break his fast. He then explained that when night falls from the east, this is a sign that it's time for all those who are fasting to break their fast as well. This hadith teaches us about patience and discipline in following Allah's commands even while we are travelling or in difficult situations. It also reminds us of how important it is not only to follow Allah's commands but also be mindful of our actions and take care of our health by breaking our fasts at the right time each day during Ramadan.
