Sahih al-Bukhari 187 (Book 4, Hadith 53) #187
Performing Ablution and Praying with a Sutra

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) performed ablution and the people used the remaining water to bless themselves. He then prayed two rak'at of Zuhr and two rak'at of 'Asr with a short spear as a Sutra in front of him.

Narrated Abu Juhaifa: Allah's Messenger came to us at noon and water for ablution was brought to him. After he had performed ablution, the remaining water was taken by the people and they started smearing their bodies with it (as a blessed thing). The Prophet offered two rak'at of the Zuhr prayer and then two rak'at of the 'Asr prayer while a short spear (or stick) was there (as a Sutra) in front of him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Perform wudu before salah; Have respect for salah; Be generous; Bless others
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of performing ablution before prayer. After he had finished his ablution, he offered two rak'at for Zuhr prayer and two rak'at for 'Asr prayer while having a short spear or stick in front of him as a sutra. The people took the remaining water from his ablution to bless themselves with it. This hadith teaches us that we should perform ablutions before praying and that we should have respect for our prayers by using something like a sutra to separate ourselves from others when praying in public places. It also shows us how important it is to be generous with what we have by blessing others with what remains after our own needs are met.
