Mercy and Punishment in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) showed mercy to a group of people who had reverted to disbelief after their Islam, but punished them severely when they killed the herdsman and drove off the camels.

Anas bin Malik narrated that: Some people or some men from 'Ukl, or Uraina came to the Messenger of Allah SAW and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are herdsmen, not tillers," the climate of Al-Madinah did not suit them. So the Messenger of Allah SAW ordered that they be allocated some camels and a herdsman, and he told them to go out with them and drink their milk and urine. When they recovered and they were in the vicinity of Al-Harrah, they reverted to disbelief after their Islam, killed the herdsman of the Messenger of Allah SAW and drove off the camels. He sent (men) after them and they were brought, and he had their eyes gouged out, and their hands and feet cut off. Then he left them in Al-Harrah in that state until they died".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be grateful for all that Allah has given you as blessings .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) showed mercy and punishment in equal measure. He was merciful towards a group of people from Ukl or Uraina who were not used to the climate of Madinah, so he gave them camels and a herdsman. However, when they reverted back to disbelief after their Islam, killed the herdsman and drove off the camels, he punished them severely by gouging out their eyes, cutting off their hands and feet before leaving them in Al-Harrah until they died. This teaches us that while Allah is merciful towards those who repent for their sins, He also punishes those who commit wrongdoings without remorse or repentance. It also shows us that we should be grateful for all that Allah has given us as blessings because if we are ungrateful then we will be punished accordingly.
