Mercy Despite Disbelief

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) showed mercy to some people who had become Muslim, but the climate of Madinah did not suit them. He allowed them to drink the milk and urine of camels, but they reverted to disbelief and killed a believer. As punishment, their hands and feet were cut off and their eyes branded before they were left in Al-Harrah until they died.

It was narrated that Anas said: "Some people from Uraina became Muslim, but the climate of Al-Madinah did not suit them. The Messenger of Allah SAW said to them: 'Why don't you go out to some camels of ours and drink their milk?'" - (one of the narrators) Humaid said: "And Qatadah said, narrating from Anas: 'And their urine'." - "So they did that, and when they recovered they reverted to disbelief after their Islam, killed the herdsman of the Messenger of Allah SAW, who was a believer, drove off the camels of the Messenger of Allah SAW, and fled as those at war. The Messenger of Allah SAW sent someone to bring them and they were caught. He had their hands and feet cut off and their eyes branded, then he left them in Al-Harrah until they died".
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ أَسْلَمَ أُنَاسٌ مِنْ عُرَيْنَةَ فَاجْتَوَوُا الْمَدِينَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ‏"‏ لَوْ خَرَجْتُمْ إِلَى ذَوْدٍ لَنَا فَشَرِبْتُمْ مِنْ أَلْبَانِهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ حُمَيْدٌ وَقَالَ قَتَادَةُ عَنْ أَنَسٍ ‏"‏ وَأَبْوَالِهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَفَعَلُوا فَلَمَّا صَحُّوا كَفَرُوا بَعْدَ إِسْلاَمِهِمْ وَقَتَلُوا رَاعِيَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مُؤْمِنًا وَاسْتَاقُوا ذَوْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهَرَبُوا مُحَارِبِينَ فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ أَتَى بِهِمْ فَأُخِذُوا فَقَطَّعَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ وَأَرْجُلَهُمْ وَسَمَّرَ أَعْيُنَهُمْ وَتَرَكَهُمْ فِي الْحَرَّةِ حَتَّى مَاتُوا

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad showed mercy even when faced with disbelief. Some people from Uraina became Muslim, but the climate of Madinah did not suit them so he allowed them to drink the milk and urine of camels in order for them to recover. Unfortunately, after recovering they reverted back to disbelief and killed a believer as well as drove away camels belonging to the Messenger of Allah [SAW]. As punishment for their actions, their hands and feet were cut off before being left in Al-Harrah until they died. This hadith teaches us that despite our differences we should always show mercy towards one another no matter what happens or what someone has done wrong because it is an important part of our faith as Muslims. We should also remember that there are consequences for our actions if we do something wrong or hurtful towards others which can be severe depending on what we have done wrong.
