Making Exceptions When Swearing Oaths

SUMMARY: Making an exception when swearing an oath.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever swears an oath and says: "If Allah wills, then he has made an exception"'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of your words and think before you speak or make a promise
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about making exceptions when swearing an oath. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that if someone swears an oath and adds the phrase “if Allah wills” then they have made an exception to their oath. This means that if something happens which is out of their control then they are not bound by the promise they made in their oath. It teaches us to be mindful of our words and to think before we speak or make a promise as we may not be able to keep it due to circumstances beyond our control. We should also remember that Allah is in control of all things and He knows best what will happen in the future so it is wise for us to add this phrase whenever we swear an oath or make a promise.
