Sunan an-Nasai 3822 (Book 35, Hadith 62) #18437
The Command of Prophet Muhammad on Umar's Vow

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Umar's vow to spend a day in 'Itikaf during the Jahiliyyah and how the Prophet Muhammad commanded him to perform it.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that 'Umar had vowed -during the Jahiliyyah- to spend a day in 'Itikaf. He asked the Messenger of Allah about that, and he commanded him to perform the 'Itikaf.

QUICK LESSONS:
Fulfill promises made even if they were done before accepting Islam; Seek guidance from religious leaders; Devote oneself for worshiping Allah

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about Umar, one of the companions of Prophet Muhammad, who made a vow during the time before Islam known as Jahiliyyah. He vowed to spend a day in 'Itikaf, which is when someone secludes themselves from worldly activities and devotes their time solely for worshiping Allah. When he asked the Messenger of Allah about his vow, he was commanded to perform it. This hadith teaches us that even if we make vows before Islam or outside its teachings, we should still fulfill them as long as they are not against Islamic teachings. We should also seek guidance from our religious leaders when we are unsure whether something goes against Islamic teachings or not.
