Keeping Promises and Doing Better

SUMMARY: It is better to do something that is better than what you have promised, and offer expiation for your oath.

It was narrated that 'Abdur-Rahman bin Samurah said: "The Prophet said to me: 'If you swear an oath, and you see something that is better, then do that which is better and offer expiation for your oath'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Think before making promises or taking an oath; Do what is best; Offer expiation when necessary; Be honest; Take responsibility for your actions.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of keeping our promises. We should always strive to do what is best, even if it means going against our word. If we make a promise or an oath, but then realize that there is something better we can do instead, then we should go with the better option and offer expiation for breaking our oath. This shows us that it's important to think before making a promise or an oath so that we don't end up in a situation where we have to break it later on. Additionally, this hadith also teaches us the importance of being honest and taking responsibility for our actions by offering expiation when necessary.
