Gifts Given on the Basis of 'Umra or Ruqba

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that any gifts given on the basis of 'Umra or Ruqba belong to the recipient for life and after death.

Ibn Juraij said: 'Ata' informed me, from Habib bin Abi Thabit, from Ibn 'Umar -and he did not hear it from him- he said: 'Allah's Messenger said: "There is no 'Umra and no Ruqba. Whoever is given something on the basis of 'Umra or Ruqba, it belongs to him for the rest of his life and after he dies"'. 'Ata' said: "It belongs to the other".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your gifts

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that any gifts given on the basis of 'Umra or Ruqba belong to the recipient for life and after death. The term ‘umra refers to a pilgrimage to Mecca which is not compulsory but is highly recommended in Islam. The term ruqba refers to a gift given in return for something else, such as a favor or service. According to this hadith, if someone gives a gift based on either an ‘umra or ruqba, then it belongs exclusively to the recipient for their lifetime and even after they die. This teaches us that we should be generous with our gifts and not expect anything in return from those who receive them. It also encourages us to give generously without expecting anything back from those who benefit from our generosity.
