Sunan an-Nasai 3732 (Book 34, Hadith 14) #18347
The Prohibition of 'Umra and Ruqba

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has forbidden the practice of 'Umra and Ruqba, and any gifts given on the basis of these practices belong to the recipient for life.

Ibn Juraij narrated from 'Ata': "Habib bin Abi Thabit informed us from Ibn 'Umar, that the Messenger of Allah said: 'There is no 'Umra and no Ruqba. Whoever is given something on the basis of 'Umra or Ruqba, it belongs to him for the rest of his life and after he dies'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your giving without expecting anything in return.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a prohibition made by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He forbade two practices called ‘Umra and Ruqba. These were customs in which people would give gifts to others in exchange for favors or services. However, according to this hadith, if someone was given a gift on the basis of ‘Umra or Ruqba, then that gift belongs to them for life - even after they die. This teaches us that it is wrong to give or receive gifts in exchange for favors or services; instead we should be generous with our giving without expecting anything in return.
