Celebrating Weddings with Generosity

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged people to give a wedding feast even if it is with one sheep, and he asked about the dowry given by 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf.

It was narrated from Anas that 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf came with a trace of saffron on him, and the Messenger of Allah said: "What's this for?" He said: "I have married a woman". He said: "What dowry did you give?" He said: "The weight of a Nawah (five Dirhams) of gold". He said: "Give a Walimah (wedding feast) even if it is with one sheep".

QUICK LESSONS:
Celebrate marriages generously

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about celebrating weddings with generosity. It was narrated from Anas that 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf came with a trace of saffron on him and the Messenger of Allah asked what it was for. He said he had married a woman and the Prophet asked what dowry he gave her. He said five dirhams of gold which is equivalent to one nawah in weight. The Prophet then encouraged him to give a walimah or wedding feast even if it was just one sheep. This hadith teaches us that marriage should be celebrated generously no matter how small or big the dowry may be and that we should always strive to make our celebrations special for those involved in them.
