Celebrating Marriage with Limited Resources

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad saw traces of yellow perfume on 'Abdur-Rahman and encouraged him to celebrate his marriage, even if it was with a small amount of money.

It was narrated that Anas said: "The Messenger of Allah saw traces of yellow perfume on 'Abdur-Rahman and said: 'What is this?' He said: 'I married a woman for a Nawah (five Dirhams) of gold'. He said: 'May Allah bless you. Give a Walimah (wedding feast) even if it is with one sheep'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Celebrate your marriage according to Islamic teachings regardless of resources available; Be generous towards others; Show gratitude towards Allah's blessings; Be humble in all circumstances.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of celebrating marriage, even when resources are limited. The Prophet Muhammad saw traces of yellow perfume on 'Abdur-Rahman and asked him what it was for. When he said that he had married a woman for five Dirhams of gold, the Prophet blessed him and encouraged him to give a wedding feast, even if it was only with one sheep. This teaches us that we should not be ashamed or embarrassed about celebrating our marriages in whatever way we can afford - no matter how small or humble the celebration may be - as long as we are able to do so in accordance with Islamic teachings. We should also remember that Allah will bless us for our efforts and generosity towards others, no matter how small they may seem.
