Sunan an-Nasai 2859 (Book 24, Hadith 242) #17471
The Significance of Hajj & Umrah

SUMMARY: This hadith is about Abdullah bin Abdullah and Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar who were prevented from reaching the Kaaba. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) then slaughtered his Hadi and shaved his head, and resolved to perform Umrah. He then said that Hajj and Umrah are both the same, before exiting Ihram on the Day of Sacrifice after offering his Hadi.

It was narrated from Nafi that: Abdulla bin Abdullah and salim bin Abdullah bin Umar when the army besieged Ibn Az-Zubair before he was killed. They said: "It does not matter if you do not perform Hajj this year; we are afraid lest we are prevented from reaching the House". He Sadi: we went out with the Messenger of Allah and the disbelievers of the Quraish prevented us from reaching the House. So the Messenger of Allah slaughtered his Hadi and shave his head. I ask you to bear witness that I have resolved to perform Umrah. If Allah wills I will set out and if I am allowed to reach the House I will circumambulate it, and if I am prevented from reaching the House I will do what the Messenger of Allah did when I was with him". Then he traveled for a while, then he said: "They are both the same. I ask you to bear witness that I have resolved to perform Hajj as well as Umrah. And he did not exit Ihram for either until he exited Ihram on the Day of Sacrifice and offered his Hadi.

QUICK LESSONS:
Fulfill Religious Obligations Even Under Difficult Circumstances .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of performing Hajj and Umrah, two important Islamic pilgrimages that Muslims must undertake if they are able to do so. It was narrated by Nafi that Abdulla bin Abdullah and Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar were prevented from reaching the Kaaba when an army besieged Ibn Az-Zubair before he was killed. In response, they were told not to worry as it would be alright if they did not perform Hajj this year due to their circumstances. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), however, reminded them of a similar situation when he himself was prevented from reaching the House with disbelievers of Quraish preventing them from doing so. As a result, he slaughtered his Hadi (sacrificial animal offered during pilgrimage rituals in Islam), shaved his head, and resolved to perform Umrah instead - which is a lesser pilgrimage than Hajj but still carries great significance in Islam nonetheless - before travelling for some time afterwards while saying that both pilgrimages are equal in importance. He eventually exited Ihram on the Day of Sacrifice after offering his Hadi as well.

This hadith teaches us how important it is for Muslims to fulfill their religious obligations even under difficult circumstances or when faced with obstacles along their way; it also serves as an example for us all on how we should respond whenever we find ourselves unable to complete our religious duties due to certain reasons beyond our control or understanding at times - just like what happened with Abdulla bin Abdullah and Salim bin Abdullah ibn Umar back then - by being patient yet determined in our faith until Allah wills otherwise for us all inshaAllah!
