Sunan an-Nasai 2737 (Book 24, Hadith 119) #17348
The Practice of Tamattu'

SUMMARY: Mu'awiyah asked Ibn 'Abbas if he knew that he had cut the hair of the Prophet at Al-Marwah, to which Ibn 'Abbas replied no. He then went on to explain that Mu'awiyah was forbidding people from performing Tamattu', but the Prophet himself had performed it.

It was narrated that Tawus said: "Mu'awiyah saide to Ibn 'Abbas: "do you know that I cut the hair of the Messenger of Allah at Al-Marwah?" He said: "No". Ibn 'Abbas said: "This Mu'awiyah forbids the people to perform Tamattu' but the Prophet performed Tamattu".

QUICK LESSONS:
Perform an 'Umrah during any month other than Dhu al Hijjah followed by a separate pilgrimage during Dhu al Hijjah itself .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the practice of Tamattu'. It was narrated by Tawus that Mu'awiyah asked Ibn 'Abbas if he knew that he had cut the hair of the Prophet at Al-Marwah. To this, Ibn 'Abbas replied no and went on to explain that Mu'awiyah was forbidding people from performing Tamattu', but in fact, it was something practiced by the Prophet himself. In Islam, there are three types of pilgrimage - Hajj al-Tamatu’ or ‘Umrah al-Tamatu’ which involves performing both ‘Umrah and Hajj in one trip; ‘Umrah al-Mufradah which involves only one ‘Umrah; and finally Hajj al Mufradah which involves only one Hajj. The practice of Tamattu’ is a combination between these two types as it requires a person to perform an ‘Umrah during any month other than Dhu al Hijjah followed by a separate pilgrimage during Dhu al Hijjah itself. This type of pilgrimage allows for more flexibility as it does not require a person to perform both rituals together in one trip like with other types such as Hajj al Mufradah or Umraha l Mufradah. Furthermore, this type also requires a sacrifice for each ritual performed separately unlike with other types where only one sacrifice is required for both rituals combined together.
