Sunan an-Nasai 1933 (Book 21, Hadith 116) #16544
Praising the Deceased

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) taught that people should not criticize the deceased, as angels are witnesses of Allah in heaven and people are witnesses of Allah on Earth.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "A funeral passed by the Prophet and they praised (the deceased). The Prophet said: 'It is granted'. Then another funeral passed by and they criticized (the deceased). The Prophet said: 'It is granted'. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you said in both cases, 'It is granted?' The Prophet said: 'The angels are the witnesses of Allah in heaven, and you are the witnesses of Allah on Earth"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak kindly about others even after their death as a sign of respect for them and for Allah's laws .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that we should be respectful when attending funerals and not to criticize the deceased. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that when a funeral passed by, if they praised the deceased then it was granted, and if they criticized them then it was also granted. He explained this by saying that angels are witnesses of Allah in heaven, and people are witnesses of Allah on Earth. This means that we should be careful with our words because even though we may not see any immediate consequences for our actions or words, there will always be someone watching us who will take note of what we do or say. We must remember to always speak kindly about others even after their death as this is a sign of respect for them and for Allah's laws.
