Respect for Funerals

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stood up for a Jewish funeral, but did not do it again.

It was narrated that Abu Ma'mar said: "We were with 'Ali and a funeral passed by him, and they stood up for it'.Ali said: "What is this?' They said: 'The command of Abu Musa'. He said: 'Rather the Messenger of Allah stood up for a Jewish funeral but he did not do it again"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Showing respect to all funerals regardless of religion or race

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about showing respect to funerals. It was narrated by Abu Ma'mar that he was with Ali and a funeral passed by them. People stood up in respect of the deceased and Ali asked why they were doing so. They replied that it was the command of Abu Musa, to which Ali responded that the Messenger of Allah had done the same for a Jewish funeral but he did not do it again afterwards. This shows us that we should show respect to all funerals regardless of religion or race as this is what our beloved prophet did himself. We should also remember that although we may stand up out of respect, we should not imitate any other religious practices such as praying over the deceased or reciting certain verses from their holy books as this would be considered an act of shirk and would be forbidden in Islam.
