Standing Up for Funerals: An Example from the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's example of standing up for a funeral, and how Al-Hasan bin 'Ali and Ibn 'Abbas reacted to it.

It was narrated from Muhammad that: a funeral passed by Al-Hasan bin 'Ali and Ibn 'Abbas. Al-Hasan stood up but Ibn 'Abbas did not/ Al-Hasan said: 'Didn't the Messenger of Allah stand up for the funeral of a Jew?' Ibn 'Abbas said: 'Yes, then he sat down"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show respect for those who have passed away by standing up when a funeral procession passes by .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of showing respect for those who have passed away by standing up when a funeral procession passes by. The hadith tells us that when a funeral procession passed by Al-Hasan bin 'Ali and Ibn 'Abbas, Al-Hasan stood up but Ibn 'Abbas did not. When asked why he didn't stand, Ibn Abbas said that the Messenger of Allah stood up for the funeral of a Jew. This shows us that we should show respect regardless of someone's religion or background; we should all be treated with dignity in death as we were in life. We can learn from this example set by our beloved prophet to show respect even if someone is different than us or has different beliefs than us; everyone deserves respect no matter what their background is.
