The Prayer of Four Occasions

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that the prayer of Al-Adha, Al-Fitr, the traveler and jumu'ah are all two rak'ahs and should not be shortened.

It was narrated that 'Umar bin Al-Khattab said: "The prayer of Al-Adha is two rak'ahs, the prayer of Al-Fitr is two rak'ahs, the prayer of the traveler is two rak'ahs and the jumu'ah prayer is two rak'ahs, complete and not shortened, upon the tongue of the Prophet .
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ الأَيَامِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ صَلاَةُ الأَضْحَى رَكْعَتَانِ وَصَلاَةُ الْفِطْرِ رَكْعَتَانِ وَصَلاَةُ الْمُسَافِرِ رَكْعَتَانِ وَصَلاَةُ الْجُمُعَةِ رَكْعَتَانِ تَمَامٌ لَيْسَ بِقَصْرٍ عَلَى لِسَانِ النَّبِيِّ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of prayer in Islam. It is narrated by 'Umar bin Al-Khattab that the Prophet taught us that for four occasions - Adha, Fitr, traveling and Jumu'ah - we must perform two rak’ahs each time. We must not shorten our prayers during these occasions as it is a sign of respect to Allah. This hadith also teaches us about how important it is to follow what our Prophet has taught us as it will bring blessings from Allah upon us. We should strive to perform our prayers with full concentration and devotion so that we can reap its rewards in this life and hereafter.
