Listening and Reciting Revelations

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ used to experience difficulty when receiving revelations from Allah, and was instructed to listen and remain silent when Jibril came to him.

It was narrated that Ibn Abbas said: Concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime: "Move not your tongue concerning to make haste therewith. It is for Us to collect it and to give you the ability to recite it- "The Prophet used to suffer a great deal of hardship when the Revelation came to him, and he used to move his lips. Allah said: Move not your tongue concerning to make haste therewith. It is for Us to collect it and to give you the ability to recite it". He said: " (This means) He will gather it in your heart, then you will recite it," And when We have recited it to you, then follow the recitation. He said: "So listen to it and remain silent. So when Jibril came to him, the Messenger of Allah listened, and when he left, he would recite it as he had taught him".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be patient & attentive while listening or learning something new; Put in effort & take your time with things that seem difficult at first; Follow instructions given by Allah .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the Prophet's experience with revelation. When the revelation would come down, it would be difficult for him, so he would move his lips in order to remember it. Allah then told him not to move his lips but rather listen carefully when Jibril came with the revelation. After listening carefully, he was able to recite what he heard as Jibril had taught him. This hadith teaches us that we should always be patient and attentive when listening or learning something new; if we do this, we will be able to understand and remember what is being said or taught better than if we rush through it without paying attention. It also teaches us that even though something may seem difficult at first, if we take our time with it and put in effort, eventually things will become easier for us.
