The Unsuitability of Luxury for the God-Conscious

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) disliked wearing a silken Farruj and said that it was not befitting for those who have Taqwa.

It was narrated that 'Uqbah bin Amir said: "A silken Farruj was presented to the Messenger of Allah and he put it on and offered the prayer in it, then when he had finished the prayer he tore it off as if he disliked it and said:'This is not befitting for those who have Taqwa'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be humble and conscious of God's commands when choosing what you wear or own.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the unsuitability of luxury for those who are conscious of God. It was narrated by Uqbah bin Amir that a silken Farruj was presented to the Prophet Muhammad, and he put it on and offered prayer in it. After finishing his prayer, he tore off the garment as if he disliked it, saying “This is not befitting for those who have Taqwa”. Taqwa means being conscious of God and His commands; thus this hadith teaches us that we should avoid luxury items if we want to be closer to Allah. We should focus on our relationship with Allah rather than materialistic things like clothing or other possessions. This hadith also teaches us humility; even though Prophet Muhammad could afford such luxurious items, he chose not to wear them because they were not appropriate according to Islamic teachings.
