Sunan an-Nasai 362 (Book 3, Hadith 14) #14968
Distinguishing Menstrual Blood from Other Types of Bleeding

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised a woman who was suffering from Istihadah to distinguish between menstrual blood and other types of bleeding, and to perform Wudu' if it is not menstrual blood.

It was narrated from Fatimah bint Abi Hubaish that she suffered from Istihadah and the Messenger of Allah said to her: "If it is menstrual blood then it is blood that is black and recognizable, so stop prying, and if it is other than that then perform Wudu', for it is just a vein".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the advice given by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to a woman who was suffering from Istihadah. Istihadah is when a woman experiences bleeding outside of her normal menstrual cycle. The Prophet ﷺ advised her that if it was menstrual blood then it would be black and recognizable, so she should not worry about it. However, if it was other than that then she should perform Wudu', as this type of bleeding is just a vein. This hadith teaches us that we should be aware of our bodies and take care of ourselves in order to maintain good health. It also teaches us the importance of performing Wudu', which is an essential part of Islamic practice for purification before prayer or any other religious activity.
