Sahih Muslim 3002b (Book 55, Hadith 88) #14512
Excessive Praise and Its Consequences

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's advice to throw dust on people who excessively praise others.

Hammam b. al-Harith reported that a person began to praise 'Uthman and Miqdad sat upon his knee; and he was a bulky person and began to throw pebbles upon his (flatterer's) face. Thereupon 'Uthman said: What is the matter with you? And he said: Verily, Allah's Messenger said: When you see those who shower (undue) praise (upon others), throw dust upon their faces.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's advice to throw dust on people who excessively praise others. It teaches us that we should not be too generous with our compliments, as it can lead to arrogance and pride in those being praised. We should also be aware of those who are overly complimentary, as they may have ulterior motives or be trying to manipulate us for their own gain. The Prophet Muhammad was teaching us that we should not take such compliments too seriously, and instead focus on our own actions and deeds rather than what others say about us. He was also warning against flattery, which can lead to a false sense of superiority in those being praised.
