Rules of Zakat

SUMMARY: Allah's Apostle has ordered Abu Bakr to write down the rules of Zakat, which includes not taking old, defected animals or male-goats as Zakat unless the collector wishes to take it.

Narrated Anas: Abu Bakr wrote to me what Allah had ordered His Apostle (about Zakat) which goes: Neither an old nor a defected animal, nor a male-goat may be taken as Zakat except if the Zakat collector wishes (to take it).

QUICK LESSONS:
Give out what you can even if it is not perfect or ideal according to you; Respect those who are collecting charity; Be generous with your charity; Follow the rules set by Allah's Apostle regarding zakah.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the rules of zakat, which is a form of charity in Islam. It was narrated by Anas that Allah's Apostle ordered Abu Bakr to write down what Allah had commanded regarding zakat. The rules state that old and defected animals or male-goats should not be taken as zakat unless the collector wishes to take it. This teaches us that we should be generous with our charity and give out what we can even if it is not perfect or ideal according to us. We should also respect those who are collecting charity and allow them some discretion in their work so they can do their job properly.
