Sahih Muslim 2322 (Book 43, Hadith 93) #13118
The Prophet's Smiling Presence

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions talking and laughing about their past actions during the Days of Ignorance, while the Prophet (PBUH) only smiled.

Simak b. Harb reported: I said to Jabir b. Samura: Did you have the privilege of sitting in the company of Allah's Messenger ? He said: Yes, very frequently, and added: He did not stand up (and go) from the place where he offered the dawn prayer until the sun rose, and after the rising of the sun he stood up, and they (his Companions) entered into conversation with one another and they talked of the things (that they did during the Days of Ignorance), and they laughed (on their unreasonable and ridiculous acts). Allah's Messenger smiled only.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of being in a good company, as it was narrated that when the Prophet Muhammad and his companions were together, they would talk about their past actions during the Days of Ignorance but instead of joining in on their laughter, he would simply smile at them. This teaches us that even though we may have done wrong things in our past, we should not be ashamed or embarrassed by it but rather learn from our mistakes and move forward with a positive attitude. It also shows us how important it is to be around people who are positive influences on us as they can help us stay away from negative thoughts or feelings that can lead to further wrongdoing.
