Sahih Muslim 2163b (Book 39, Hadith 8) #12746
Responding to Salutations from People of Other Faiths

SUMMARY: The Companions of the Prophet asked him how they should respond to people of other faiths who greet them with salutations, and he instructed them to reply with "Wa 'Alaikum".

Anas reported that the Companions of Allah's Apostle said to him: The People. of the Book offer us salutations (by saying as-Salamu- 'Alaikum). How should we reciprocate them? Thereupon he said: Say: Wa 'Alaikum (and upon you too).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be polite and respectful towards those who are different than us; Show respect for others without compromising our own beliefs or values; Be kind and courteous in our interactions with others regardless of their faith or background; Reply "Wa 'Alaikum" when greeted by people from other faiths

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Muslims should respond when greeted by people from other faiths. The Companions asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ how they should reciprocate when greeted by people from other religions, such as Jews and Christians. He instructed them to say “Wa 'Alaikum” which means “and upon you too” in Arabic. This teaches us that we should be polite and respectful towards those who are different than us, even if we do not share their beliefs or practices. We can show respect for others without compromising our own beliefs or values. It also shows us that it is important to be kind and courteous in our interactions with others, regardless of their faith or background.
