Responding to Jewish Salutations

SUMMARY: Responding to salutations from Jews with a similar phrase, but not the same.

Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger as saying: When the Jews offer you salutations, some of them say as-Sam-u-'Alaikum (death be upon you). You should say (in response to it): Let it be upon you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respond politely and respectfully even if someone greets us in an unpleasant way
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Muslims should respond when they are greeted by Jews. The Prophet Muhammad instructed that when the Jews offer salutations, some of them say as-Sam-u-'Alaikum which means “death be upon you”. In response to this greeting, Muslims should reply with “Let it be upon you” instead of repeating the same phrase back. This hadith teaches us that we should always respond politely and respectfully even if someone greets us in an unpleasant way. We must remember that our words and actions reflect our faith and character so we must strive to remain courteous at all times.
