The Importance of Not Wasting Food

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of not wasting food and to share it with others.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported Allah's Messenger having said: O people of Medina, do not eat the flesh of sacrificed animals beyond three days. Ibn al-Muthanni said: Three days. They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet) complained to the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) that they had children and servants of theirs (to feed), whereupon he said: Eat, and feed others, and store, and make it a provision of food.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of not wasting food and to share it with others. It was narrated by Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, who reported that Allah's Messenger said, “O people of Medina, do not eat the flesh of sacrificed animals beyond three days.” The companions asked if they could feed their children and servants, to which he replied “Eat, and feed others, and store, and make it a provision of food.” This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful when consuming food so as to avoid wastage. We should also be generous in sharing our resources with those around us who are in need. Furthermore, we should store up some provisions for future use or for times when there may be scarcity or difficulty in obtaining resources.
