Sahih Muslim 1722e (Book 31, Hadith 5) #11613
Finding Lost Items

SUMMARY: When finding lost items, one should make an announcement for a year and if no one claims it, then the finder can keep it. If someone does come to claim it, then they should be given the item. Lost camels should be left alone as they are able to take care of themselves. Lost sheep can either be kept by the finder or given away as charity.

Zaid b. Khalid al-Juhani, the Companion ot Allah's Messenger , said that Allah's Messenger was asked about the picking up of stray gold or silver, whereupon he said: Recognise well the strap and the bag (containing) that and then make an announcement regarding that for one year, but if none recognizes it, then spend that and it would be a trust with you; and if someone comes one day to make demand of that, then pay that to him. He (the inquirer) asked about the lost camel, whereupon he said: You have nothing to do with that. Leave that alone, for it has feet and also a leather bag, it drinks water, and eats (the leaves) of the trees. He asked him about sheep, whereupon he said: Take it, it is for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf.

QUICK LESSONS:
Make an announcement for 1 year when finding lost items such as gold or silver so people who have lost their belongings may get them back; also give away our findings in charity if no one claims them after a year has passed!

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about what to do when finding lost items such as gold or silver, camels and sheep. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that when finding these items, one should make an announcement for a year so that if anyone has lost them they can come forward and claim them back. If no one comes forward after a year then the finder may keep them as a trust with him/herself. For camels however, he said that we have nothing to do with them because they are able to take care of themselves in nature - drinking water and eating leaves from trees etc.. For sheep he said that either you can keep it or give it away in charity - whichever you prefer! This hadith teaches us values such as honesty and generosity - being honest enough to announce our findings so people who have lost their belongings may get them back; also being generous enough by giving away our findings in charity if no one claims them after a year has passed!
