Sahih Muslim 1722d (Book 31, Hadith 4) #11612
Lost Property - Responsibility of Finding Its Owner

SUMMARY: A person came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and asked what to do if he found something lost. The Prophet instructed him to make an announcement for a year, and if its owner does not turn up, then it is a trust with him.

Zaid b. Khalid al-Juhani reported. There came to Allah's Messenger a person, the rest of the hadith is the same but with the variation (of these words): His face became red, his forehead too, and he felt annoyed; and made an addition after the words: He should make announcement of that for a year, and if its owner does not turn up, then it is a trust with you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Make an announcement for one year when you find something lost so that its rightful owner can come forward and claim it back

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the responsibility of finding the owner of lost property. It is narrated by Zaid b. Khalid al-Juhani that a person came to Allah's Messenger and asked what should he do if he finds something lost. The Prophet instructed him that he should make an announcement for one year so that its rightful owner can come forward and claim it back. If no one comes forward after one year, then it becomes a trust with the finder of the property who must take care of it until its rightful owner claims it back or dispose off in charity as per Islamic law. This hadith teaches us about honesty, responsibility, justice and kindness towards others which are important values in Islam as well as other religions too.
