Sahih Muslim 1722c (Book 31, Hadith 3) #11611
Keeping Lost Items Until Claimed

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that if one finds a lost item, they should keep it until someone comes to claim it and if no one does, then they can spend it.

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Rabi'a b. Abu Abd al-Rahman with the same chain of transmitters but with this addition: " There came a person to Allah's Messenger while I was with him, and he asked him about picking up of a stray article, and he said: When none comes to demand it, then spend that".

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep found items until their rightful owners come to claim them or Islamic law allows spending them

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of being honest and responsible when finding a lost item. It is important to not take advantage of someone else's misfortune by taking something that isn't yours. Instead, you should keep the item until its rightful owner comes to claim it or until you are allowed to spend it according to Islamic law. This teaches us the importance of being honest and responsible with other people's belongings even when no one is watching us. It also shows us how we should be generous with our possessions and not take advantage of others in any way possible.
