The Practice of Qasama in Pre-Islamic Days

SUMMARY: This hadith talks about the practice of Qasama, which was retained from pre-Islamic days and was practiced by Allah's Messenger.

Sulaiman b. Yasar, the freed slave of Maimuna, the wife of Allah's Apostle , narrated from one of the Ansari Companions of Allah's Messenger that Allah's Messenger retained (the practice) of Qasama as it was in the pre-Islamic days.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect traditions, Appreciate cultural heritage, Respect elders and their wisdom

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about a practice called 'Qasama' that was practiced during pre-Islamic times and continued to be practiced by Allah's Messenger. It is not known what this practice entailed exactly but it is clear that it was important enough for it to be retained even after Islam came into being. This shows us how much respect Islam has for practices that were already in place before its advent and how much importance is given to preserving traditions and customs that have been passed down through generations. It also teaches us to respect our elders and their wisdom as well as appreciate our cultural heritage instead of discarding them completely when something new comes along.
