Sahih Muslim 1632a (Book 25, Hadith 21) #11331
Giving Sadaqa from Land Acquired in Khaibar

SUMMARY: Umar asked the Prophet (PBUH) for advice on what to do with a piece of land he had acquired in Khaibar. The Prophet (PBUH) advised him to keep the corpus intact and give its produce as Sadaqa, which Umar did. He devoted it to the poor, nearest kin, emancipation of slaves, and guests without hoarding any of it for himself.

Ibn Umar reported: Umar acquired a land at Khaibar. He came to Allah's Apostle and sought his advice in regard to it. He said: Allah's Messenger, I have acquired land in Khaibar. I have never acquired property more valuable for me than this, so what do you command me to do with it? Thereupon he (Allah's Apostle) said: If you like, you may keep the corpus intact and give its produce as Sadaqa. So 'Umar gave it as Sadaqa declaring that property must not be sold or inherited or given away as gift. And Umar devoted it to the poor, to the nearest kin, and to the emancipation of slaves, aired in the way of Allah and guests. There is no sin for one, who administers it if he eats something from it in a reasonable manner, or if he feeds his friends and does not hoard up goods (for himself). He (the narrator) said: I narrated this hadith to Muhammad, but as I reached the (words)" without hoarding (for himself) out of it". he (Muhammad' said:" without storing the property with a view to becoming rich". Ibn 'Aun said: He who read this book (pertaining to Waqf) informed me that in it (the words are)" without storing the property with a view to becoming rich".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity from your wealth . Use your possessions wisely while you still have them . Help those around you who may not be so fortunate . Feed unexpected guests . Emancipate slaves oppressed by their masters .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about giving charity or sadaqa from a piece of land that was acquired by Umar in Khaibar. When he asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for advice on what to do with it, he was told to keep the corpus intact and give its produce as sadaqa. This means that instead of selling or inheriting it or giving away as a gift, he should use its produce for charitable purposes such as helping those who are poor and needy, emancipating slaves who are oppressed by their masters, feeding guests who come over unexpectedly etc., without hoarding any part of it for himself. It teaches us that we should be generous with our wealth and use whatever we have been blessed with in order to help others around us who may not be so fortunate. We should also remember that whatever we have is only temporary; therefore we must not become attached to material possessions but rather use them wisely while they are still ours so that Allah may reward us generously when they are taken away from us one day.
