Sahih Muslim 1624 (Book 24, Hadith 25) #11299
Maintaining Justice in Gifts

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that it is not fair to give one child more than the others and that justice should be maintained.

Jabir (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the wife of Bashir said (to her husband): Give to my son your slave as a gift, and make for me Allah's Messenger a witness He came to Allah's Messenger and said: The daughter of so and so (his wife Amra bint Rawaha) asked me to give my slave as a gift to her son, and call for me Allah's Messenger as a witness. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Has he (Nu'man) brothers? He (Bashir) said: Yes. He (further) said: Have you given to all others as you have given to him? He said: #He said: Then it is not fair; and verily I cannot bear witness but only to what is just.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for fairness and justice in all matters of life

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of maintaining justice when giving gifts. In this hadith, Bashir's wife asked him to give her son a slave as a gift and to call upon the Prophet Muhammad as a witness. When Bashir told the Prophet about his wife's request, he asked if Nu'man had any brothers and if he had given them all gifts like he was giving Nu'man. The Prophet then said that it was not fair and that he could only bear witness to what is just. This teaches us that we must always strive for fairness when giving gifts or doing anything else in life so as not to create an imbalance between people or favor one person over another unjustly. We must also remember that Allah will judge us on our actions so we should always strive for justice in all matters of life.
