Sahih Muslim 1620a (Book 24, Hadith 1) #11275
The Value of Charity

SUMMARY: Donating charity should be done with the intention of it being given away and not taken back, as taking it back is like a dog eating its own vomit.

Umar b. Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) reported: I donated a pedigree horse in the path of Allah. Its possessor made it languish. I thought that he would sell it at a cheap price. I asked Allah's Messenger about it, whereupon he said: Don't buy it and do not get back your charity, for one who gets back the charity is like a dog who swallows its vomit.

QUICK LESSONS:
Donate your possessions for charitable purposes without expecting anything in return .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of donating charity with the intention that it will not be taken back. Umar b. Khattab donated a horse in the path of Allah, but its possessor made it languish and he thought that he would sell it at a cheap price. He asked Allah's Messenger about what to do in this situation, and was told not to buy it or take his charity back because doing so is like a dog who swallows its vomit - an act which is disgusting and shameful. This hadith teaches us that when we donate something for charitable purposes, we should do so with no expectation of getting anything in return; if we take our donation back then we are essentially undoing our good deed and behaving disgracefully just like a dog eating its own vomit.
