The Revelation of Inheritance Through Ablution

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) visiting a sick person and sprinkling water from his ablution on them, which resulted in the revelation of a verse pertaining to inheritance.

Jabir b. Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him) reported: While I was ill Allah's Messenger ﷺ came to me and found me unconscious. He (the Holy Prophet) performed ablution, and sprinkled over me the water of his ablution. I regained my consciousness and said: Allah's Messenger, my case of inheritance is that of Kalalah. Then the verse pertaining to the inheritance ( of Kalalah) was revealed. I (one of the narrators) said: I said to Muhammad b. Munkadir: (Do you mean this verse)" They ask you; say: Allah gives you decision in regard to Kalalah" (iv. 177)? He said: Yes, it was thus revealed.
حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، يَقُولُ دَخَلَ عَلَىَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا مَرِيضٌ لاَ أَعْقِلُ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَصَبُّوا عَلَىَّ مِنْ وَضُوئِهِ فَعَقَلْتُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا يَرِثُنِي كَلاَلَةٌ ‏.‏ فَنَزَلَتْ آيَةُ الْمِيرَاثِ ‏.‏ فَقُلْتُ لِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ‏{‏ يَسْتَفْتُونَكَ قُلِ اللَّهُ يُفْتِيكُمْ فِي الْكَلاَلَةِ‏}‏ قَالَ هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about an incident that happened between the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Jabir b. Abdullah. Jabir was ill and unconscious when the Prophet visited him and performed ablution before sprinkling some of its water over him. As a result of this act, Jabir regained consciousness and asked for help regarding his inheritance case which was related to Kalalah. After this incident, Allah revealed a verse pertaining to inheritance in relation to Kalalah as an answer to his plea for help. This hadith teaches us that if we are in need of help or guidance from Allah then we should turn towards Him through prayer or supplication as He will always answer our prayers if it is good for us in His sight. It also shows us how much mercy the Prophet Muhammad showed towards those who were ill by performing ablutions over them as it was believed that it would bring healing upon them due to its spiritual significance in Islam.
