Sahih Muslim 1550a (Book 21, Hadith 156) #11081
The Benefits of Lending Land

SUMMARY: It is better to lend land to a brother for cultivation than to receive rent from it.

Mujahid said to Tawus: Come along with me to Ibn Rafi b. Khadij in order to listen from him the hadith transmitted on the authority of his father (pertaining to the renting of land) from Allah's Apostle . He (Tawus) scolded him and said: By Allah, it I were to know that Allah's Messenger had forbidden it, I would have never done it. But it has been narrated to me by one who has better knowledge of it amongst them (and he meant Ibn 'Abbas) that Allah's Messenger said: It is better if a person lends, his land to his brother (for cultivation) than that he gets recognized rent on it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Helping others in need , Being generous with resources , Creating an environment where everyone can benefit without exploiting each other’s weaknesses or vulnerabilities

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the benefits of lending land instead of receiving rent from it. Mujahid asked Tawus to come with him and listen to a hadith transmitted by Ibn Rafi Khadij about renting land from Allah's Apostle. Tawus scolded him, saying that if he knew Allah's Messenger had forbidden it, he would never have done it. However, Ibn 'Abbas narrated that Allah's Messenger said that it is better if a person lends his land to his brother for cultivation than getting recognized rent on it. This teaches us the importance of helping our brothers and sisters in need rather than taking advantage of them financially or otherwise. We should strive towards creating an environment where everyone can benefit from each other’s resources without exploiting one another’s weaknesses or vulnerabilities.
