Sahih Muslim 1536t (Book 21, Hadith 124) #11050
Cultivating Land and Lending It To Brothers

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (PBUH) advised people to cultivate their land, lend it to their brothers if they cannot do so, and retain it if they cannot lend it.

Jabir b. Abdullah (Allah be pleased with them) reported: We used to get land (on rent) during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger, with a share of one-third or one-fourth (of the produce from the land irrigated) with the help of canals. Thereupon Allah's Messenger stood up (to address) and said: He who has land should cultivate it, and if he does not cultivate it, he should lend it to his brother, and if he does not lend it to his brother, he should then retain it.

This hadith teaches us that we should be generous with our resources and help those in need whenever possible. We should also strive for self-improvement by utilizing our resources in a productive manner such as cultivating our lands instead of leaving them idle or unused.
