Sahih Muslim 1472c (Book 18, Hadith 24) #10812
Three Divorces Pronounced at One Time

SUMMARY: During the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad and Abu Bakr, three divorces pronounced at one time were treated as one. However, during the caliphate of Umar, people began to pronounce divorce frequently so he allowed them to treat pronouncements of three divorces in a single breath as one.

Abu al-Sahba' said to Ibn 'Abbas: Enlighten us with your information whether the three divorces (pronounced at one and the same time) were not treated as one during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger and Abu Bakr. He said: It was in fact so, but when during the caliphate of 'Umar (Allah be pleased with him) people began to pronounce divorce frequently, he allowed them to do so (to treat pronouncements of three divorces in a single breath as one).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be careful with your words , Think before you speak

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the rulings on divorce during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad and his companions. During this time, if someone pronounced three divorces in a single breath it was considered as only one divorce. However, when Umar became caliph he noticed that people were pronouncing multiple divorces too often so he allowed them to treat pronouncements of three divorces in a single breath as only one divorce. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful with our words and think before we speak because our words have consequences and can cause harm if not used properly. It also teaches us that even though laws may change over time, it is important for us to remember that Allah's laws are always constant and unchanging no matter what happens around us.
