Prayer During Travel

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions used to offer two rak'at of prayer while travelling.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: I accompanied Allah's Messenger and he never offered more than two rak'at during the journey. Abu Bakr, 'Umar and 'Uthman used to do the same.
حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ حَفْصِ بْنِ عَاصِمٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي أَنَّهُ، سَمِعَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ، يَقُولُ صَحِبْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَكَانَ لاَ يَزِيدُ فِي السَّفَرِ عَلَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ، وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ كَذَلِكَ ـ رضى الله عنهم‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the practice of offering prayer during travel. It was narrated by Ibn 'Umar that he accompanied the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and observed that he never offered more than two rak'at during a journey. Similarly, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman also followed this practice. This hadith teaches us that we should not neglect our prayers even when we are travelling as it is an important part of our faith. We should strive to offer at least two rak’ats of prayer while travelling as it was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions.
