Sahih Muslim 1405e (Book 16, Hadith 20) #10555
The Practice and Prohibition of Mut'as

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), two types of Mut'as were practiced, but Umar later forbade them.

Abu Nadra reported: While I was in the company of Jabir b. Abdullah, a person came to him and said that Ibn 'Abbas and Ibn Zubair differed on the two types of Mut'as (Tamattu' of Hajj 1846 and Tamattu' with women), whereupon Jabir said: We used to do these two during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger . Umar then forbade us to do them, and so we did not revert to them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the practice and prohibition of a type of contract called 'Mut’a'. During the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ two types of this contract were practiced - Tamattu’ for Hajj and Tamattu’ with women. However, after his death Umar forbade these practices. This hadith teaches us that we should follow the teachings and guidance given by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as well as those given by his companions after him. We should also be aware that some practices may have been allowed in one era but not in another due to changing circumstances or conditions.
