Sahih Muslim 1193a (Book 15, Hadith 55) #9990
Refusing Gifts While in Ihram

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) refused to accept a gift of a wild ass while in the state of Ihram, and he comforted the giver by explaining why he could not accept it.

Al-Sa'b b. Jaththama al-Laithi reported that he presented a wild ass to Allah's Messenger when he was at al-Abwa', or Waddan, and he refused to accept it. He (the narrator) said: When the Messenger of Allah looked into my face (which had the mark of dejection as my present had been rejected by him) he (in order to console me) said: We have refused it only because we are in a state of Ihram.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings even if you have to give up something you want or like; Be considerate towards others; Understand feelings from refusal of gifts; Respect religious reasons for refusing gifts .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of following Islamic rules and regulations even when it comes to accepting gifts. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was offered a wild ass as a gift, but he refused to accept it because at that time, he was in the state of Ihram which is an important part of Hajj or pilgrimage. This shows us that we should always follow Islamic teachings even if it means giving up something we want or like. It also teaches us that we should not feel bad if someone refuses our gifts due to religious reasons because they are doing so out of respect for Allah's commands. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us about being considerate towards others and understanding their feelings when they are disappointed by our refusal to accept their gifts.
