Sahih Muslim 1192c (Book 15, Hadith 54) #9989
Avoiding Perfume in Ihram

SUMMARY: It is better to avoid using perfumes when entering the state of Ihram.

Muhammad b. al-Muntashir reported on the authority of his father: I heard from Ibn 'Umar having said this:" It is dearer to me to rub tar (on my body) than to enter upon the state of Ihram (in a state) of shaking off the perfume". He (the narrator) said: I went to 'A'isha and told her about this statement of his (of Ibn 'Umar). Thereupon she said: I applied perfume to the Messenger of Allah and he then went round his wives and then entered upon the state of Ihram in the morning.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about avoiding perfumes when entering into a state of Ihram. The hadith is narrated by Muhammad b. al-Muntashir on the authority of his father and Ibn 'Umar who said that it was dearer to him to rub tar on his body than to enter upon the state of Ihram in a state of shaking off perfume. When this statement was reported to 'A'isha, she said that she applied perfume to Prophet Muhammad and he then went round his wives and entered upon the state of Ihram in the morning. This hadith teaches us that it is better for us not use perfumes when entering into a state of Ihram as it can be distracting from our spiritual journey towards Allah SWT. We should instead focus on our spiritual journey and leave behind any distractions such as perfumes or other worldly items which can take away from our devotion towards Allah SWT during this time period.
