Sahih Muslim 1125e (Book 13, Hadith 147) #9786
Fasting on the Day of Ashura

SUMMARY: The Quraish used to fast on the day of Ashura before Islam, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) commanded Muslims to fast on that day until fasting in Ramadan became obligatory. He also said that those who wish to fast can do so, and those who don't want to can break it.

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Quraish used to fast on the day of Ashura during the pre-Islamic days. The Messenger of Allah then commanded to fast on that day till (fasting) in Ramadan became obligatory. Then the Messenger of Allah said: He who wishes to fast should do so, and he who wishes to break it may do so.

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey religious practices , Make your own decisions based on your beliefs and understanding .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith is about fasting on the day of Ashura. Before Islam, the Quraish used to observe this practice as a form of worship. When Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a messenger from Allah, he commanded Muslims to continue this practice until fasting in Ramadan became obligatory. He also said that if someone wishes to fast they can do so, but if they don't want to then they are free not too. This hadith teaches us about obedience and respect for religious practices even if we don't understand their significance or purpose at first glance. It also teaches us about freedom of choice when it comes to religious practices; we have the right and freedom not only follow what is prescribed but also make our own decisions based on our beliefs and understanding of religion.
