Sahih Muslim 1119b (Book 13, Hadith 129) #9768
Rewards for Fasting and Not Fasting

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that those who fasted and those who did not both have their own rewards.

Anas (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah was journeying (along with his Companions). Some of them had observed the fast whereas the others had broken it. Those who did not fast girded up their loins and worked, but the observers of the fast were too weak to work. Upon this he (the Messenger of Allah) said: Today the breakers of the fast have gone with the reward.

QUICK LESSONS:
Persevere in your faith even if you cannot observe all religious obligations; Appreciate all efforts made by others; Show mercy towards others; Be patient in difficult times
EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith of Anas ibn Malik speaks to the importance of fasting during the month of Ramadan. It is a time when Muslims around the world abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset in order to gain closeness to Allah. However, this hadith also teaches us that even if one does not fast during Ramadan they will still receive a reward for their efforts. This is because Allah is merciful and appreciates all efforts made by His servants regardless of whether or not they are able to observe the fast. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us about patience and perseverance as it was mentioned that those who observed the fast were too weak to work but still received a reward for their efforts.
