Sahih Muslim 1080f (Book 13, Hadith 9) #9648
Fasting During Ramadan

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of fasting during Ramadan and breaking it when the new moon of Shawwal is sighted.

'Abdullah b. 'Umar (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported Allah's Messenger as saying: The month (of Ramadan) may consist of twenty nine days; so when you see the new moon observe fast and when you see (the new moon again at the commencement of the month of Shawwal) then break It, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate it (and complete thirty days).

QUICK LESSONS:
Observe fast when sighting new moon; Calculate if sky is cloudy; Strive for excellence while fulfilling religious obligations

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of fasting during the month of Ramadan, which is one of the five pillars in Islam. It also explains that when you see a new moon, you should start your fast and when you see it again at the beginning of Shawwal, then break your fast. If there are cloudy skies, then calculate how many days have passed to make sure that 30 days have been completed for a full month. This hadith teaches us to be mindful and aware of our religious obligations and to be patient in fulfilling them even if we cannot physically observe them due to certain circumstances such as cloudy skies or other reasons beyond our control. It also teaches us that we should not take any shortcuts or try to find loopholes in fulfilling our religious obligations but rather strive for excellence in doing so with patience and perseverance.
