Sahih Muslim 1080e (Book 13, Hadith 8) #9647
Calculating Ramadan and Shawwal with Sighting of New Moon

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of sighting the new moon to determine when Ramadan and Shawwal begin and end, as well as how to calculate if the sky is cloudy.

Ibn'Umar (Allah be pleased with-both of them) reported Allah's Messenger as saying: The month of Ramadan may consist of twenty-nine days. So do not fast till you have sighted it (the new moon) and do not break fast, till you have sighted it (the new moon of Shawwal), and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate.

QUICK LESSONS:
Wait until you can see the new moon before beginning or ending your fasting during Ramadan or Shawwal; Use your knowledge to make decisions even if you cannot physically see something happening; Seek guidance from Allah in all matters; Trust in Allah's timing for things to happen.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that Muslims should wait until they can see the new moon before beginning or ending their fasting during Ramadan or Shawwal. If it is cloudy outside, then they should calculate when the new moon will appear. This teaches us that we must be patient in our faith and trust in Allah's timing for things to happen. It also shows us that we must use our knowledge to make decisions even if we cannot physically see something happening. We must also remember that Allah knows best what is best for us so we should always seek His guidance in all matters.
