Sahih Muslim 1075a (Book 12, Hadith 223) #9622
Charity and Gifts

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that charity should be given to those in need, and that it is also permissible to accept gifts from others.

'A'isha reported that (once) the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him, ) was presented with beef. It was said (by someone) that it had been given to Barirah as Sadaqa. Upon this he (the Prophet) said: It is a Sadaqa for her and a gift for us.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity when you can; Accept gifts from others if they are given out of kindness; Be generous towards others; Be mindful of your own needs.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of giving charity to those in need. It also shows us that it is permissible to accept gifts from others as long as they are not taken with the intention of taking advantage of someone else's generosity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was presented with beef, which had been given as a charity for someone else, but he accepted it and said that it was both a gift for them and a charity for the recipient. This teaches us the importance of being generous towards others while still being mindful of our own needs. We should strive to give what we can when we can, but also remember that there is nothing wrong with accepting gifts from others if they are given out of kindness and not taken advantage of.
