Sahih al-Bukhari 993 (Book 14, Hadith 4) #958
Night Prayer and Witr

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that the night prayer should be offered in two rak'at increments, and if one wishes to finish it, they can offer one rak'a as witr for all the previous rak'at.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: The Prophet said, "Night prayer is offered as two rak'at followed by two rak'at and so on, and if you want to finish it, pray only one rak'a which will be witr for all the previous rak'at". Al-Qasim said, "Since we attained the age of puberty we have seen some people offering a three-rak'at prayer as witr and all that is permissible. I hope there will be no harm in it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow religious teachings .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his followers how to perform their night prayers. He said that it should be done in two rak’ats at a time, meaning that you would pray two units of prayer then take a break before praying another two units of prayer. This process is repeated until you have prayed enough or wish to finish your prayer with one final unit called witr. Al-Qasim added that some people choose to pray three units of prayer as witr instead of just one unit and this is also permissible. This hadith teaches us about the importance of following the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when performing our prayers and also shows us how we can use our own judgement when making decisions about religious matters.
