Sahih Muslim 1056 (Book 12, Hadith 165) #9564
Generosity and Avoiding Miserliness

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) distributed something to people, and Umar b. Khattab (RA) questioned why he gave it to those people instead of others who were more deserving. The Prophet replied that if he had not given it to them, they would have either begged from him or thought of him as a miser, which he was not.

Umar b. Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah distributed something. Upon this I said: Messenger of Allah, I swear by God, the others besides them were more deserving than these (to whom you gave charity). He said: They had in fact left no other alternative for me. but (that they should) either beg importunately from me or they would regard me as a miser, but I am not a miser.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of generosity and avoiding miserliness in our lives. It is narrated by Umar b. Khattab (RA). In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was distributing something among some people when Umar b. Khattab questioned why he gave it to those people instead of others who were more deserving than them. The Prophet replied that if he had not given it to them, they would have either begged from him or thought of him as a miser, which he was not; thus highlighting the importance of generosity in our lives and avoiding being labeled as a miser by giving charity even when there are other more deserving individuals around us. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us that we should be generous with whatever we can give away without expecting anything in return; whether it is money or any other form of charity such as knowledge or time etc., for Allah will reward us for our good deeds no matter how small they may seem at first glance!
